With this release, we would like to address the video circulated throughout social media by one citizen on October 19, 2018. The video depicts one of the waste separation corners located next to M/S “State University” which is still under construction.
We would like to notify the public that CENN, the Waste Management Association (WMA), Tbilisi City Hall and Tbilservice Group Ltd. are cooperating together in order to open 13 new waste separation stands within the city of Tbilisi. This action will provide waste separation facilities for Tbilisi residents.
Furthermore, we would like to note that the aforementioned separation corners are not in operation yet, therefore, all stands are sealed at this point. Unfortunately, the stand located next to M/S “State University” was vandalized – the seal was removed, thus resulting in widespread public misunderstanding.
Please note that the new waste separation stands will officially be opened and ready to use in November 2018. Further information regarding the progress of this initiative will be communicated to the public and citizens will have a chance to dispose of their separated waste in the designated separation bins. Meanwhile, Tbilisi residents can use current operational waste separation corners situated in 10 different locations in Tbilisi. Separated waste is collected by a waste aggregating company and is delivered to recycling companies. Part of the waste which is not being recycled in Georgia is being exported. Each waste separation stand accommodates 4 types of waste separation bins for paper, PET plastic, glass and aluminium cans.
The recycling program in Georgia is being implemented by the USAID-supported CENN program, Waste Management Technologies in Regions (WMTR).
