CENN, with the Ministry of Environment and Agriculture, organized the sixth regular meeting of the National Climate Platform with the support of the European Union. The National Climate Platform was created within the framework of the “Georgian Climate Action (GEO CAP)” project, and its goal is to support climate change adaptation measures, as well as to fulfil the international obligations in the field of climate change, to promote the Nationally Determined Contributions (NDC) document, and to implement the climate change strategy and action plan, with active involvement and coordination of different stakeholders.
The meeting, which was attended by up to 30 stakeholder organizations, served, on the one hand, to present the 2022 report on the implementation of the 2021-2023 action plan on climate change in Georgia by the Ministry of Environment and Agriculture and, on the other hand, to introduce the concept of sustainable management of landscapes, developed by Non-governmental organization “Merisi”.
“The National Climate Platform, managed by the Ministry and CENN, is an important mechanism for stakeholders working on climate change in terms of sharing and introducing different climate-related initiatives. This is a reporting tool on how the Ministry is implementing the Climate Change Action Plan, which is a necessary step for the implementation of the Nationally Determined Contribution (NDC),” said Maia Tshkhvaradze, head of the Climate Change Division of the Ministry of Environment and Agriculture, in her welcoming remark.
The report of the Head of the Climate Change Division was mainly about the progress of the implementation of the Climate Change Action Plan by sector. It should be noted that the rate of progress in the transport, agriculture and forestry sectors increased compared to 2021.
The second part of the meeting was led by Marina Shvangiradze, an expert on climate change issues and a representative of the sustainable development centre “Remisia”. Her report was devoted to the concept of sustainable management of landscapes developed by “Remisia”, the purpose of which is to promote the involvement of the private sector in the sustainable management of landscapes and the development of green agro-tourism and to increase their contribution in fulfilling the obligations assumed by Georgia under the Paris Agreement.
The meeting ended with a discussion session in which governmental and non-governmental organizations and agencies actively participated and expressed their opinion about the climate policy development in the country.
The meeting was organized within the EU-funded project “Georgia Climate Action Project (GEO-CAP), which is being implemented by CENN with its partner organizations KRDF, ACU, YPU, and RLS-ADA. The project has four focal regions in Georgia: Guria, Imereti, Kakheti, and Racha-Lechkhumi and Lower Svaneti.
