Assessment and Sustainable Management of Water Resources in the Iori and Aragvi River Catchment Basins

This study aims to assess the current and future water resources in the Iori and Aragvi river catchment basins, taking into account climate change, growing water demand, and the condition of natural resources. The study also includes an analysis of factors affecting water resource distribution and system sustainability, including the condition of forest cover, soil erosion, and the potential impact of inert material accumulation in reservoirs.

The analysis presented in the document is based on available hydrological and climatic data and aims to support evidence-based decision-making in water resource management. Special focus is given to the ecological state of the catchment basins, the functioning of reservoirs, the preservation of water resources required for Tbilisi’s water supply, and ensuring reliable water supply for key irrigation systems. The findings of the study provide a technically sound foundation for the sustainable management of water resources and further, more detailed evaluations of reservoir operations.

The study was conducted by CENN and prepared under the “Green Caucasus” project, with the financial support of the Austrian Development Agency (ADA) within the framework of the “Austrian Partnership for International Cooperation.”
