An ongoing initiative supported by the European Union and CENN sees the empowerment of rural women and girls as one of the ways to promote the implementation of climate-smart solutions in agriculture in the two municipalities of Guria.
Women play an important role in the development of agriculture. It is important to inform women as agents of change on the importance and approaches of transitioning to climate-smart agriculture, which will enable them to produce biologically clean products, receive more financial income and, therefore, improve their economic situation. The project, which has been running since September 2022 in two municipalities of the Guria region, served this very purpose.
The project informed and empowered women farmers on climate-smart agriculture practices through various types of training and sharing of practical experiences.
The final meeting of the project was held in Ozurgeti Municipality on February 1, in the “Women’s Room”. Depending on the topic, the desire to attend the presentation was high, among them there was a great interest from the women members of the City Hall and City Council working in the municipality.
“When the grant competition was announced, we decided on the most sensitive topic and selected a group to work with. Women involved in the household, by growing ecologically clean products, take responsibility for family members and community members. In addition, this activity often becomes their source of income. Through trainings, providing information and sharing best practices, we wanted to strengthen their abilities in this direction, as well as motivate them to be actively involved in this activity,” Tamar Kupradze, head of the project.
Within the framework of the project, 15 female beneficiaries were trained and received practical information on the possibilities of implementing climate-smart agriculture.
One of the beneficiaries of the project, Khatuna Chkhaidze, a beekeeper from the village of Lesa, says, along with interesting information, I made friends within the project and we share our personal experiences with each other.
Lali Sichinava, Education, Culture, Sports and Youth Affairs Service of Ozurgeti Municipality City Hall, says that “such projects will contribute to employment and the financial stability of families.”
In the second part of the meeting, the participants and guests of the project, together with certificates, were given a “Farmer’s Notebook” as a gift, which will provide readers with practical information and advice on the production of climate-smart agriculture. The publication was developed in close cooperation with the Adam Beridze Soil, Food and Plant Protection Center “Anaseuli”.
The project was initiated by the “Guria Development Union” within the framework of the ongoing EU-supported project “Georgian Climate Action Program (GEO-CAP)”, implemented by CENN with partner organizations – KRDF, ACU, YPU and RLS-ADA.
