The young environmentalists have successfully implemented the “Climate Change” project in three public schools in Chiatura and Tkibuli. The project aims to promote renewable energy among the population and raise awareness about climate change. The refined project idea emerged during the participants’ involvement in a climate change thematic camp supported by CENN, the European Union, and was promptly executed after the camp concluded.
The implementation of the project involved the participation of the NGO “Chiatura Student Council” in Chiatura, along with various local public schools and their students. As part of the project framework, an electric bicycle was installed at Chiatura N7 public school in collaboration with “Tene.” This innovative bicycle generates electricity when its pedals are rotated, enabling the charging of any electric device. These initiatives not only encourage the use of renewable energy but also promote a healthy lifestyle.
In addition to promoting renewable energy, the project organizers assisted in greening schoolyards. Evergreen trees were planted in Chiatura N1, Zestafoni N7, and Tkibuli N2 public schools with the support of Imereti coordinator Shota Gaprindashvili. Furthermore, awareness-raising campaigns were conducted in Chiatura, Zestafoni, and Tkibuli, including climate change thematic training sessions in schools. The project resulted in the greening of schools and increased awareness among young people, students, and teachers about renewable energy, climate change, and ways to mitigate its impact.
One of the young initiative leaders shared their future plans: “We plan to establish renewable energy on a large scale among the population. We also intend to organize a forum where the youth of Chiatura, Tkibuli, and Zestafoni will be presented. Our group members will serve as speakers, sharing knowledge about climate change with students. This initiative aims to create a group in Imereti against climate change, uniting students and young people, and developing and implementing new ideas and initiatives in the future. I believe these efforts will contribute to our country taking another step in the fight against climate change.” – Lizi Metskhovrishvili, one of the youth initiatives.
These youth initiatives are carried out within the framework of the “Georgian Climate Program” project, supported by the European Union. The project is implemented by CENN in collaboration with the Kakheti Regional Development Fund (KRDF), Chiaturian Union (ACU), Racha-Lechkhumi and Kvemo Svaneti Agrotourism Development Association (RLS-ADA), and Young Teachers’ Union (YPU).
