On January 22, organized by CENN with the support of the European Union, within the framework of the project “Georgian Climate Action Program (GEO-CAP)”, a steering committee meeting of the project was held. The meeting aimed to present the project results achieved in 2023 to the stakeholder parties and familiarize them with future activities. The meeting was attended by more than 60 participants from all four target regions of the project. Among them were members of the advisory board, grantees, youth, civic society organisations and representatives of local and national government.
The event was opened with a welcome speech by Laurent Nicole, CENN executive director, Lieze VANWYMELBEKE from the EU Delegation in Georgia and Maia Javakhishvili, deputy head of the environment and climate change department of the Ministry of Environmental Protection and Agriculture of Georgia. It was mentioned that Georgia as a receiver of EU candidate status, will be active in the climate change sector and the involvement of civil society is crucial in the development and implementation of climate policy.
The first panel discussion of the meeting was devoted to youth initiatives implemented by youth on the local level. The initiatives aimed to raise awareness about climate change among the local community and included activities such as the installation of electric bicycle and mini solar stations to charge electric devices. Within the second panel, the winning sub-grant projects were presented by the grantees such as the installation of solar stations, restoration of the degraded wind belt and provide knowledge about climate-smart agriculture to the farmers.
The event was organized within the EU-funded project “Georgia Climate Action Project (GEO-CAP): Promoting Civil Society Engagement in Climate Change Policy Design and Implementation”, which is being implemented by CENN with its partner organizations KRDF, ACU, YPU, and RLS-ADA. The project targets 4 regions in Georgia: Guria, Imereti, Kakheti, and Racha-Lechkhumi and Lower Svaneti.
