CENN, with the support of UNDP and Norway, united 300 students from 20 schools across Georgia with the desire to implement the right waste management practices.
During three months, students planned innovative initiatives aimed at reducing plastic consumption in their schools. Each school conducted audits to assess their plastic footprint and installed separate bins and water dispensers, significantly reducing the daily consumption of disposable plastic bottles. Polyethylene bags were replaced with reusable bags created by students, and to raise awareness, participants organised thematic exhibitions and conducted digital campaigns.
An independent jury has identified three winning schools after the competition. We are pleased to announce the pioneering schools of the SOS Plastic Competition, recognized for their efforts in reducing plastic waste. Meet the winners:
- #169 Public School, Tbilisi
- Vazha-Pshavela #9 Public School, Gori
- School “Genius”, Tbilisi
The 169th school team of students developed a prototype of the application that allows users to calculate their plastic footprint.
Based on studies and audits conducted by the ninth public school in Gori, it was determined that plastic consumption had been reduced by 75% compared to the initial amount by the end of the competition.
Students at “Genius School” produced informative videos that heightened awareness of plastic pollution throughout the school community, and numerous volunteers actively participated in the initiative.
The winning schools will be awarded a 2,300 GEL voucher from the hardware store. In addition, ProCredit Bank will arrange for painting the wall of the building as a gift to its chosen school.
Throughout the competition, schools underwent training sessions and received individual consultations focused on effective waste management. This initiative provided students with valuable insights into sustainable practices and empowered them to actively contribute to implementing several innovative ideas.
Congratulations to each school on their successful participation in the campaign!
The SOS Plastic competition was organized by CENN with the support of the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) and Norway. This competition is part of the “Leadership, Equality, Advocacy and Democracy” (LEAD) project’s initiative, “End Plastic Pollution in Georgia,” implemented by CENN.
