Most underground fresh water in Georgia is drinking water, but it is unevenly distributed across the country. Many cities and villages do not have continuous access to drinking water. The most severe water scarcity issue is in the village of Nagomari, in Ozurgeti municipality, which has been without water for 30 years. To address this problem, a project called “Together for the Future” was launched by young environmentalists. The project aimed to improve the water supply of the Nagomari school and raise awareness about climate change amongst young people.
It was important to the initiative group for the school to have a well-functioning water supply system. As a result, the project involved renovation works of the well in cooperation with the school administration, and access to water resources in the school was increased. In order to create greater awareness amongst teenagers, informational meetings were organized to discuss climate-related issues. Additionally, a bus stop was painted by the initiators along with the invited painter, the theme of which was the vital importance of water. The local community was also involved, with a special technique being used to speed up work on the project.
The project was implemented with the help of the local school administration and the government in collaboration with the young initiators. The village administration also provided special equipment to facilitate the work and ensure timely completion of the initiative.
Youth initiatives are implemented within the framework of the “Georgian Climate Program” project, supported by the European Union. The project is implemented by CENN in cooperation with Kakheti Regional Development Fund (KRDF), Chiaturian Union (ACU), Racha-Lechkhumi and Kvemo Svaneti Agrotourism Development Association (RLS-ADA), and Young Teachers’ Union (YPU).
